Dear Subscriber,
Thanks to all who attended our Fifth Annual Holiday Fundraiser this December at Dedo Lounge in Boston. Many lucky attendees walked away with door prizes donated by area businesses, including brunch for two at Rialto and a football signed by Tom Brady. By the end of the evening we had raised more than $7,000 in support of our mission to end homelessness for people living with HIV and AIDS. Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make this event a great success!
| Medicare Part D: Potential effects on housing assistance |
 |
If you joined the new Medicare drug program which started on January 1, you will not lose your housing assistance. However, the amount you pay for housing may go up. But you should still apply for the Medicare drug program-- the money you save on your prescription drug costs will be much greater than your increase in housing costs.

Advocacy Strategy: Preventing against shut-off this winter |
|
|
With warnings of unprecedented heating bills this winter, programs that provide utilities assistance will play a vital role in maintaining safe and stable housing. This article will provide you with several programs that can assist you in your heating bills and how to apply, including LIHEAP, the Salvation Army's Good Neighbor Energy Fund, RAFT, and others. There is also information on discounted utility rates for those under 175% of the poverty level and how to sign up. Most information is specific to Massachusetts, though some nationally-available resources are included.
The second part of this article explains the rights that protect you against shut-off. It describes how to certify to the utility company that you are financially burdened and how to certify that you have an illness, while protecting your confidentiality.
Last, the article describes how to turn on utilities at a new address when you've accrued debt at an old address.
