Challenges in Housing for Older Persons with HIV/AIDS
Specialized supportive housing has been designed and developed
around the country to help meet the various health and social needs of people
living with HIV/AIDS. Very few of these settings, however, specifically
address the needs of an aging and older PLWHA population. What are the
particular housing needs and preferences of people over 50 with HIV/AIDS? What
existing housing and service models exist to needs these needs? Are new models
needed or can existing elder and/or HIV/AIDS specific housing meet these needs?
The presentation examines the intersection of age and housing
context in terms of a) the delivery of social and medical services to older
persons with HIV and AIDS, b) health promotion and quality of life, and b) risk
factors, looking at two case studies that reflect some of these findings. As the
HIV+ population ages, services and education efforts will need to adapt to the
particular needs of older persons.
