Needs assessment is a vital first step in the housing or program development process.
AHC uses a variety of community participatory needs assessment models tailor fit to the community, population
or topic being addressed. Needs assessments can range in scope from a small neighborhood study to a state-wide
research project. Contact AHC to see how needs assessment can inform and direct your development process.

The Massachusetts HIV/AIDS Housing Needs Assessment is a particularly extensive example of our needs
assessment work.
Conducted during the spring and summer of 2003, this study focused on the housing needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in Massachusetts. The subsequent report details what kinds of housing are available to people with HIV/AIDS across the state and where this housing is located, comparing this with epidemiological, focus group and other data to map out need at both the state and local levels.
It also describes best practices for housing underserved populations such as HIV-positive people with histories of chronic homelessness, mental illness, substance use and incarceration. It should be useful for planners, providers, government officials, consumers, and others involved in HIV/AIDS housing.
